Bighorns

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills,  from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.   Psalm 121: 1-2

There are some beautiful views of the Bighorns between here and Buffalo where I grew up and our mother is
in the care center.  This shot was taken last Saturday.  I never get tired of looking at these mountains.  Diane

Gratitude - for the mountain mother sheltering us to the west.  Always beautiful, always different, always the same.                                                    Diane

The Bighorns

We met Leonard's daughter Rose, her husband Don and our granddaughter Lili, up on top of the Bighorns today.  By on top I mean that the altitude at the campground is 8,900 feet and it's just a ways from Medicine Mountain which is 9,642 feet.  Leonard did great, I guess because he had his oxygen with him.
There's still snow banks in the high country.  Since they haven't melted by now they'll be there through next winter.
A Stellar's Jay aka Camp Robber paid us a visit.  Very inquisitive.  Since we didn't have the food out yet he moved on.  They sure are pretty birds, aren't they?
And a couple deer munched grass and lingered around the outskirts of the campground.  I think they were just curious, Leonard says they probably are glad to see other living beings.
The wild flowers have just about all faded away, their year is over.
Apparently the Forest Service or Highway Department feels that people don't have enough brains to know if something is worth taking a picture of.  These are new signs along the highway to point them out to us!  It probably won't be too long before all the deer, elk, coyotes, hawks, eagles, and even camp robbers will have to wear little signs like this!!    It was great to be in the mountains but it's over for this year, now hunters will be taking over and then it will give way to winter sports.  Hope you're having a good Labor Day weekend.  Diane

Winter's Coming

We had to go to Billings, Montana today for an appointment.  The Bighorns are so beautiful on the way, but I see there's snow in the high country.  This picture isn't real good, it's from the car.  Hope you've had a good day.  Diane

Heavenly Blues

Every now and then I have to slip in a picture of the Bighorns.
They were just spectacular today.

It frosted the night before last and many of the tender plants didn't make it.  The morning glories got nipped but they are still pretty.                                           Diane

Beautiful Day

It was a great way to spend my birthday. For many years I've wanted to take Leonard to a special place to me in the Bighorns. We didn't know if we could do it because we had to go to a pretty high altitude (around 8,000 ft.) and he's on oxygen. The place isn't on the map and it's taken me years to figure out where it was. I was there as a child with my family but kids don't necessarily pay attention to landmarks when we were just wanting to get to a destination. After several years and finally talking to the right person who has been there, we found it today! This has been a personal quest and I feel so happy about it. And to spend the day in my beloved Bighorns, bouncing down a bumpy mountain road with the smell of wildflowers in the air with my sweetheart driving and my little dog on my lap is almost heaven indeed.
Above is a photo of mountain bluebirds and some larkspur.
Thanks for all of your well wishes. You're all just peaches! Diane

Growing Up in The Bighorns

Zuzu has a beautiful post about growing up in the Colorado mountains.

It made me think of my growing up in the Bighorns. On the weekend my three siblings along with Mother and Daddy would load up into the jeep or old pickup and head for the mountains. Everybody except Mother and I would fish (neither one of us could abide killing anything) or else we would rock hunt or just drive for miles and miles. Daddy would tell a story about where we were headed - Soldier Park, Hunter Mesa, Sourdough Creek, Onion Gulch, Lost Cabin, Seven Brothers. It kept us entertained and seemed to get us to the destination faster.

Daddy died in 1990. A few years ago I talked to a Forest Service Supervisor. He told me that my dad took more information with him when he died than most people ever knew about the mountains. I'm so fortunate to have learned those things. Diane
