This is a picture of me on my first day of school - September 1948. We didn't have public kindergarten then. There was private but it was costly. So it was first grade. I was ready. Grandpa had taught me several words including MAHOGANY(?). I could spell cat and dog and several other words, too. I knew that when I went to school I was going to learn to read -
that very day! I was so excited. When I got home that day I would be able to read the newspaper to my mom and dad. Here's where the disappointment comes in - we didn't even
do reading that day. They didn't even start for a couple weeks and then when they did it was excrutiatingly boring and slow. We had the Jim and Judy primers. "Look, Jim, look. See Spot run. Run Spot run!" This went on forever and I guess I finally learned to read. But not the first day! Diane
