My Favorite Teacher

Mrs. Jack (Helen) Meldrum
Mrs. Meldrum was my high school English and lit teacher. She not only taught me the right way to speak and write but she was a beautiful role model.
She had wonderful white hair and occasionally after a trip to the beauty shop it would be a spectacular color of sky blue. (I never figured out if they did this on purpose or if it was an accident with the peroxide.) It didn't matter in her case because that was when she wore her blue suit to match, blue shoes, blue hose and blue jewelry. She was very stately and looked like a blue queen.

Seldom was her classroom without a bouquet of pussy willows, daffodils or lilacs. Most of the time she was happy and joyful. On days that she wasn't you really couldn't tell by her manner but those were the days she would have a safety pin in her hem and her slip would be showing. I always thought that was so sweet because it showed that she was really just like us.

I loved Mrs. Meldrum. She was an inspiration in my life when I needed it most.
