O.K. my bird friends, I was walking along and I see this Northern Flicker busily pecking away, so busy, in fact, that I got very near to him.

He flew away and I looked to see what he was doing and here is the hole that he left....

Maybe they do that, I just thought they pecked on trees. Whatever, it was interesting.

Methinks he found a mound of ants and enjoyed lapping them up with his long tongue! How fun to see this!! :c)
I do believe they are looking for ants or grubs in the ground.I have frequently seen them on the lawn digging for food.
