Yesterday my daughter, Catherine, was telling me about a weekend out of town for her birthday in Red Lodge, Montana. She said they walked down along an icy stream that was still partially frozen and frigid. They were watching a bird which she described to me as being black and looking somewhat like a robin. She said it was so fascinating, he was diving down into the water and bobbing in and out of the rapidly flowing stream. When we hung up I got on the Cornell website and typed in "diving songbird". Sure enough up popped this little bird - the American Dipper. I don't know if you're familiar with it but I'm not. It's the only truly aquatic songbird in North America! Diane
