August

I bet deep down you still wish your mom would take you clothes shopping every August for the new school year.     - Bridget Willard

We didn't get a lot of new things for school but usually we got a few things.  New shoes, new socks, a new pencil box and pencils, maybe one new store bought dress.  Mother sewed.  She ordered fabric from the catalog (Sears or Montgomery Wards) and made several dresses each for my two sisters and I.  She made shirts for my brother, she even taught herself how to make Western shirts for him.  Too much of August was spent standing on a chair while Mother pinned up hems.

My favorite store bought dress was red with white polka dots and a twirly skirt.  Of course it had ties, most all of the dresses had ties to make a bow in back.

The new things were the best part.  Being confined to school - not the best part!              Diane

Hi Diane, My mother sewed for me also. One of my favorites was a pinafore she made me.... I don't remember having alot of new things --but my kids did... We bought a new outfit for each of them, to wear to school on that first day.

Thanks for the memories.
Hugs,
Betsy

Beautiful memories.I still feel a touch of excitement when I see all the new school supplies. To me it was the thrill of a new notebook and trying so hard to keep it neat.I always messed up.

I didn't like the clothes shopping, Mom didn't have the best fashion sense. But I loved the smell of the new school books, the smell of the shoe department, and classrooms on the first day of school. After that, well, the excitement faded!

Mmmmm,,such nostalgia. I remember all those things, including the comments from Betsy and Ruth. The one dress I remember that Mama made was a purple plaid. It really was pretty, but I told Mama I hated it, just didn't like the color. Isn't it funny that's the only one I remember and I learned to really like it a lot.

I remember those days, Diane. Dresses with ties in the back - new dresses and shoes for a new school year. September will always be the start of the year for many of us.

My mom sewed when I was little. I actually don't have any memories of back to school shopping. When I started babysitting at age 12, started making money, my parents thought I should be able to pay for extra things on my own. Even at 14, when I wanted my ears pierced, my dad told me if God wanted holes in my ears, he would have put them there. :/ I saved up and then went with a friend to the mall to get them pierced. I remember going through the Sears and MW catalogues for my style inspiration. HA! Kinda funny now when you look back on what was offered then. :) Hope you have a fabulous Friday! Tammy

Hi Diane, my mum sewed most of our clothes too. I used to hate the way the pins pricked my legs as the hems swung around while mum was pinning them up and the stiffness of the fabric..but I can still remember the lovely smell of a brand new dress..that I liked!

Great memories mom! Hard to believe Grandma MADE everything. Pretty self reliant. I love that about her. Going back to school always depressed me. Giving up the dog days of summer, ice cream, swimming, bathing suits, running through sprinklers, riding bikes and getting a tan. Getting ready for school felt like total DREAD. I hated it. I still get stressed out. I have no idea why! Love you, Bean
