How I Got Here

My computer training was Heinz 57.  A little bit here, a little bit there, talking to everybody I considered way smarter than I on the computer.  Asking them questions, pestering them.  And I must say I never ran into anyone! who was impatient or acted like I was dumb.  In 1990 I went to work for a short time for an insurance company.  I was told that I'd be using a computer, I was paralyzed with fear.  The woman who I worked for was very patient and helped me along.  I remember the thrill I got when I hit enter and it did!! I felt like the smartest person in the world. Later I went to work for the Episcopal Church and they were still using the DOS shell and I thought I was going to pull my hair out.  Even at that we set up a new program and I entered the entire membership and learned to make it work for me.  Leonard and I got a computer and were using a program called Aladdin which was actually an early attempt into what was to be the Internet.  It's been bumpy but it's been fun to learn in my own hit and miss way.  I have notes some of you have sent me to help me get through a hairy problem.  I'd be really interested to know about how you got here.  Did you take lessons?  learn it in school?                   Diane

Diane, I had to learn by trial and error too. My daughters finally convinced me that if they let their four year olds play on the computer and it didn't hurt it, I probably wouldn't either.LOL! Well it wasn't completely true. I went places I never should have gone (you know, those recesses deep in the computer that no one should go)and uninstalled the sound on my computer. Now I just stick to places I know well. hehe
My daughter Ember set up my blog for me, and when I get in a bind, she has my password and can usually go and fix what I can't.
hugs to you from here....

My son pushed me into the computer world, and I'm sure glad he did.He taught me most of what I now know about computers, and is still teaching me as I go along. My computer is my friend, because many of my friends live in it.I found that I really enjoy the technology and am eager to learn as much as I can.

I wanted to learn...we bought the first one from my husband's son and I just tried one thing at a time and read the help things and googled how to do what I wanted to do...and here I am!! I've always had the idea that if someone else can do it, I can too...within reasonable limits of course.

The best thing I ever did was to take Typing in high school. I can fly on the keyboard... I never took computer lessons --but learned in my job in Texas. Learned all of that DOS stuff also....

When I met George, he talked me into switching over to a Mac --and it's been wonderful ever since...
Hugs,
Betsy

I remember being really weary of the "internet" being in my home...lol! That was waaaay back in the early 90's when we had a 286/33 with massively slow dial-up connection and Compuserve was the service of choice. I remember having a CD that held the entire Compton's Encyclopedia and we thought that was the coolest thing EVER! My hubby was the big computer guy and I just learned from him. Now, we can't even imagine our lives without it, can we?

I learned basically everything from my husband, who is a computer wiz. Quite a few things though, I figured on my own, having the basics he taught me was a great help though.
