Backyard Miracles

The robins were screaming something awful this afternoon back in the south forty.  I took off over there to see what culprit cat was causing trouble for them THIS time.  The robins bounced around from one tree to the next - "OVER THERE!  IT'S OVER THERE!! AN AX MURDERER!!" I looked and looked and finally I saw it - a turtle!  It was about a foot long and I have no idea what kind it was.  I laughed, said hello to the turtle and came home to get my camera.  As I went back over it was quiet.   No turtle - he'd already made his way to the creek.

To some people this does not seem amazing but it does to me.

#1 Miracle - How did that turtle move so fast?  I wondered how he'd gotten off course but then I decided he didn't, he was taking a short cut.  The creek hairpins around two blocks here in our neighborhood and he was just going from one part of the creek to the other.

#2 Miracle - Probably the biggest one.  Why do the robins trust me?  Why don't they screech and fuss when I'm around, even when Rascal's with me?  Why do they go about their robin business completely unconcerned with my presence unless I almost step on one? And yet why do they consider something which almost looks like a rock to be a threat?         Diane

The Robins know that you are helping them. They trust you. I think that is incredible.... They are your friends. Hope you get to see the babies sometime...

Wonder where that turtle really went?????? Maybe he captured a ride on the train to the creek.... ha ha

Great post... Definitely some miracles.
Hugs,
Betsy

Sometimes it seems as though the birds instinctively know who will harm them and who won't.
You must seem very harmless, and they are so right.

You're right about them being so trusting to us gardeners. I think that they truly do trust us. Maybe they were warning you, thinking you would trip over the 'rock'.hehe

Oh how I miss robins!

I see June above me here and i've told her the same thing. I miss Robins. I grew up in western PA and I miss robins. There are none here in Vegas though one went astray about 10 years ago and found his way to my yard for 2 days.

I miss robins....

Hope you get to see your turtle friend again soon. I guess that they can put it in motion when needed!

My Dad has two old Eagles that sit all winter and he feeds them fish and when its cold they will sit and wait almost at the door for another piece...Diane when you come I'll have to introduce you to my parents they just love your blog as much as I do... You have so many silent Alaskan followers!!

What a gorgeous, fat robin!
Yesterday as I was weeding there was a lovely plump robin following close behind, enjoying the turned-over beds. We watched one another, and I think we had equal enjoyment of the experience!

Oh, this is just delightful!!! Such a cute story. I saw a turtle crossing a road once, and was surprised at how fast it could move. Maybe they have had a little secret all these years.
It is interesting that the robins would be so upset by it. Down here, when I hear the birds twittering and screeching I figure they are making conversations or having a meeting of some kind. They set up such a stir.
