Growing Up in The Bighorns

Zuzu has a beautiful post about growing up in the Colorado mountains.

It made me think of my growing up in the Bighorns. On the weekend my three siblings along with Mother and Daddy would load up into the jeep or old pickup and head for the mountains. Everybody except Mother and I would fish (neither one of us could abide killing anything) or else we would rock hunt or just drive for miles and miles. Daddy would tell a story about where we were headed - Soldier Park, Hunter Mesa, Sourdough Creek, Onion Gulch, Lost Cabin, Seven Brothers. It kept us entertained and seemed to get us to the destination faster.

Daddy died in 1990. A few years ago I talked to a Forest Service Supervisor. He told me that my dad took more information with him when he died than most people ever knew about the mountains. I'm so fortunate to have learned those things. Diane

The Bighorn Mountains - do you know how exotic that sounds?! I love to see the photos and that you post about your surroundings and the little stories you write - they are a window on another world.

Hi Diane, You are so lucky to have been raised near the Bighorns. I was raised in the Appalachian Mtns. I never knew anything but the mountains ---and never appreciated them until I left them... Now--I cannot get enough of any mountains!!!

Great post... Your Dad must have been a fabulous man --full of lots of stories.
Hugs,
Betsy

I can imagine that a day's outing was quite the adventure with the backdrop of those wonderful mountains. What great memories!

We are kinderd spirits, Diane! So lucky to have learned about nature at an early age, and such a great gift our parents have passed down to us!

Colorado has changed with all the tourist & ski resorts, but Wyoming still has many beautiful wilderness areas!

Hugs,
Zuzu

I love your post. My parents and grandparents lived in Star Valley until 1955. We also had mountains and took long, long rides on weekends. We had a few picnics down on the Snake River where we could walk right up to the water. Almost all of my childhood memories take place there. It was a lovely life.
