Leaving Alaska

We had to leave at 4 am in the morning to get to the Anchorage airport. Guiness slept on Amanda's lap as she drove the Seward Highway.
We drove through a bird sanctuary as the sun was coming up but mist was still hanging on the ground. Chickaloon Flats on Turnagin Arm in the morning light.
We had to try to get a perfect picture of this gorgeous red sun.
In the process we found these two young moose, too. Sorry about the quality of the second one.

I had to hurry to get to my plane and called Amanda when I got sat down. I was crying so bad from not getting to say goodbye properly (what's properly, they're all hard). When I hung up the lady next to me touched my arm and asked me if I as all right. She was so sweet. Turns out you would have loved her, she and her husband were birders who earlier this year had been to Nome, Alaska in search of some rare birds to fill their list. We talked all the way to Portland. Sandy if you read this it was so nice being a seatmate with you.
Saying goodbye to the Land of the Midnight Sun. Diane

Goodbyes are never easy, are they? Even though we can stay in close touch these days, it's still hard. SO glad you had the time with them there and that it was so special.
